New Orleans is the largest city and metropolitan area in the state of Louisiana. Whether referred to as La Nouvelle-Orleans, NOLA, or The Big Easy, the city is named after the Duke of Orleans who reigned as Regent for Louis XV from 1715 to 1723 as it was established by French colonists and strongly influenced by their European culture. It is located in southeastern Louisiana, straddling the Mississippi River and is a major United States port, but the city is most famous for it’s French and Spanish architecture, Voodoo cemeteries, creole cuisine, music, specifically the birthplace of jazz, world famous Bourbon Street, and the countless annual celebrations including Mardi Gras which draws hundreds of thousands of people to the city year after year. Not far behind Mardi Gras, Gay Halloween and Southern Decadence are top draws for locals, visitors, and tourists and are hosted by the city’s LGBT Community.
